An important responsibility of this position will be the supervision/mentoring of all lab-safety staff in EHS.


RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Supervises and cross-coordinates staff involvement in project areas impacting laboratory safety programs.
  • Oversees laboratory safety team implementing laboratory health and safety programs for the WCMC laboratory community including safety plans, education and outreach, hazard risk assessment and signage programs, site and building inspections.
  • Reviews and coordinates laboratory safety manuals, guidance documents and procedures to ensure consistency with standards and service.
  • Supervises laboratory safety staff; educates, trains and mentors staff in proper and timely completion of work activities; recommends hires, assigns and reviews work; administers the annual laboratory safety inspection program including coordinating with Department Administrators to determine the Principal Investigators and laboratories associated with the inspection.
  • Coordinates reporting and communication of laboratory inspection findings and corrective actions to the Departments and Principal Investigators.
  • Oversees the FDNY laboratory inspection program and ensures resultant violations are addressed by the Department and laboratory within the appropriate timeframes and required documentation is returned to the FDNY substantiating compliance with the violations.
  • Responds as part of emergency team to hazardous material spills, gas leaks and other indoor air quality issues in the laboratories.
  • Develops and maintains related EHS Program Manuals including the Laboratory Chemical Hygiene Plan and associated EHS inventories, Health and Safety Door signs, Research Safety Checklists and auditing laboratories.
  • Develops strategies to minimize the hazard or risk.
  • Provides in-service training to lab personnel on various components of plan.
  • Conducts laboratory chemical safety-based accident investigations.
  • Manages the college’s high hazard operating procedure program.
  • Develops and maintains related EHS program manuals and procedures including updates on high hazard operating procedures and related sections of Laboratory Chemical hygiene plan.
  • Identifies chemical hazards and risks.
  • Manages the research safety checklist program including assessment, verification and approval of checklist.
  • Coordinates communication to Principal Investigators identifying deficiencies and required corrective actions.
  • Identifies safety hazard and non-compliance issues in the laboratory and works with Principal Investigator or other senior laboratory staff to correct issues; performs other job related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, engineering, environmental management or related field and at least five years of experience, including three years of supervisory experience required.
  • Master’s degree in science, engineering, environmental management or related field or Industrial hygiene and Industrial Hygienist Certification highly desired.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required.
  • Candidate must be able to lift safety equipment weighing up to fifty pounds and move fifty five gallon drums.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Conducts industrial hygiene health hazard evaluations in a large military facility or in a variety of facilities. Plans, coordinates, and conducts assigned detailed surveys and investigations related to recognition, evaluation and formulation of controls for occupational health hazards. Participates in surveys of worksites throughout a medical region or a large, complex facility to identify and evaluate the potential for excessive exposure to toxic materials and harmful physical agents found in the workplace. For some of the materials evaluated, there is little information available on the nature and extent of hazard. The following is a detailed listed of day-to-day activities:
  • Contacts facility and plant management to conduct pre-survey briefing and coordinate operational activities with scheduled field visits.
  • Observes workplaces, frequently accompanied by management, supervisory, and safety representatives, to determine the types of agents and controls involved, and nature of the problem, and the number and type of environmental samples or measurements to be collected, or instrumental measurements to be made.
  • Discusses occupational medical conditions with staff physicians and interviews employees referred by them for consultation to identify adverse symptomatology and/or potential etiology.
  • Conducts and/or directs industrial hygiene sampling. This generally involves attaching personal sampling devices to employees and observing them during sampling; collecting area samples and making appropriate instrumental measurements in fulfilling survey strategy.
  • After the laboratory completes analysis of samples and reports results, employee writes preliminary and final reports which include findings, evaluations, and specific recommendations for control of hazardous conditions.
  • Participates in educational program designed to inform management, supervisors, and employees of potential hazardous exposures, applicable directives, latest control techniques, and general occupational health matters. Assists facility management in the development and review of training plans, including planning courses to meet specific and general needs.
  • Furnishes technical consultation and advice on occupational health problems to management, supervisors, and employee groups at a large facility or at several smaller activities throughout the region, which includes suggesting solutions to specific problems, including follow-on guidance and assistance toward implementation.
  • Prepares guides for using specific materials and reviews management drafts of processes, procedures and instructions with respect to adequacy of treatment of health hazards.
  • Makes hazard evaluation of new products introduced at supported activities for determining health hazard assignment and recommends rejection, substitution, or unique controls, as appropriate, of items proposed for procurement including those which contain prohibited or highly toxic materials posing severe health hazards.
  • Advises management personnel, line supervisors and employees on industrial hygiene matters.
  • Serves as a witness to give expert testimony in court or before administrative boards on matters concerning industrial hygiene, as required. Also serves as permanent consulting member on management boards/committees to advise on industrial hygiene.
  • At the request of the Office of Workers Compensation Programs, reviews claimants work histories to find information related to claims, and investigates occupational medical conditions referred by physician.
  • Perform certain laboratory analysis of chemical agents and measurements of physical phenomena, as assigned.
  • Evaluates adequacy of controls for health hazards in initial and final plans and specifications for facility construction, alteration and repair, as well as modification or relocation of processes. Makes appropriate recommendations for correcting deficiencies. Provides advice regarding health hazard controls to facilities engineers, and to contractor engineers during design phases, or in resolving areas of disagreement.
  • Consults extensively with various scientific and other Federal agency experts in coordinating techniques and gathering information concerning evolving technology, particularly with respect to occupational carcinogens, mutagens, or teratogens.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Science, Environmental Health and Safety, Chemistry or related discipline plus 4-6 years of experience conducting industrial hygiene assessments in similar environments.
  • Professional knowledge of industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices which enable the employee to carry out health hazard evaluations of a wide variety of industrial worksites which are characterized by complex work processes, chemical compounds including those for which reliable standards do not exist, and complications in hazard evaluation resulting from synergistic effects.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering or a related area of study and 2 years of industry work experience is required. Industrial Hygiene work experience is required. Certification by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene is preferred. Current knowledge of applicable government environmental and safety regulations (EPA & OSHA), and company policies is required. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) is required. American University is hiring for an Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Project Manager. Starting salary for this position is $60,000 - $70,000. The Environmental Health and Safety Project Manager fosters a safe workplace environment by advancing environmental, health and safety performance improvement in support of regulatory requirements and university policies. This position develops and implements environmental, health and safety management systems to integrate EH&S into university operations. The project works with minimal supervision and acts as liaison with university departments.

Along with other environmental health and safety project managers, this position reports directly to the Senior Director of Organizational Risk Management. The Risk Management and EH&S unit is part of the larger risk management and safety services department responsible for emergency and continuity management, public safety, and policy and compliance oversight. This position is responsible for:

  • evaluating employee exposure to potential hazards and interpreting data to determine appropriate controls to eliminate hazardous exposures,
  • understanding and communicating basic sample and survey data,
  • interpreting federal, state and local laws, regulations, and policies as they apply to environmental practices and regulatory reporting,
  • recommending and developing appropriate strategies to address university safety, health and environmental policies/standards and regulatory requirements,
  • investigating and resolving issues, questions, or concerns received from within the university, from outside clients, regulatory agencies, etc.

Daily interaction with Chemistry, Physical Plant, Biology, Public Safety, and Art departments regarding hazardous materials and risk management activities will be required. The environmental health and safety project manager should have strong customer service skills. The position may require the conducting of training classes and seminar presentations. The position will be responsible for conducting contract and contractor management including the preparation of Request for Proposals. This position requires working in an array of indoor and outdoor conditions in a variety of working environments. The job may require entry into potentially hazardous environments for purposes of hazard evaluation, remedying of hazardous situations, or removing hazardous materials.

This position requires a Bachelors degree. It is preferred that the Bachelor's degree be in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Health & Safety Science, Risk Management or a related field. A Masters degree is encouraged. A minimum of three years experience and memberships in professional organizations are preferred. A professional certification such as: Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, or Certified Biosafety Professional is preferred and can substitute for the education or experience requirements. Completion of OSHA HAZWOPPER, DOT 181, and other professional development courses is strongly recommended.

The employee should have knowledge of the principles and practices of industrial hygiene as well as OSHA, EPA, TSCA, RCRA, and other federal, local and public health and safety standards. The environmental health and safety project manager must be able to interpret these standards and apply them to a variety of university and research settings.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. The environmental health and safety project manager should be familiar with database, spreadsheet, and word-processing computer software applications. Experience in developing and conducting training programs is preferred; technical writing also preferred.

This position is considered "essential" under the University's personnel policy guidelines and therefore is subject to be on call during a weather or other emergency, during non-standard working hours, or when necessary.
