Recruiting the Next Generation of IH's--Roundtable Notes

 Observations & Challenges:

  • NJ undergraduate and graduate schools don’t seem to be fostering IH programs.
  • We are not seeing a lot of 20 - 40 year old volunteers in the organization.
  • Government employees are not reimbursed for professional meetings and not encouraged to obtain professional certifications. There is little benefit to being involved.
  • There is minimal regulatory activity and it is no longer a business safety driver.
  • There are fewer workers to protect.
  • There are fewer student s majoring in the sciences.
  • While there is growth in some specialty areas, there is too much fragmenting of IHs into other EHS activities. Management is broadening of the scope of work. Individuals are expected to do more with less.
  • Recruiting new professionals – students don’t understand the field. IHs have to be skilled in many areas and be proficient in communication.

Suggested Resolutions:

  • NJAIHA should consider offering free admission to government employees for meetings.
  • We need more OUTREACH to students, young professionals, and those considering career changes.
  • NJ colleges (Rutgers, etc.) should consider starting or re-instituting IH programs into their curriculum. Students need co-op and inte rn opportunities.
  • We need to educate workplaces, workplace organizations, and the general public. Possible recruits don’t know what an IH is. Take the definition "recognize, evaluate, control" and explain the core values. We are detectives, policemen, teachers, etc. Identify what IH’s must know.
  • Increase mentoring opportunities. Recruits often ask "where will we work?" and "where are the opportunities?" The landscape is changing; we need to figure out where it’s going in 20 – 30 years.
What is NJAIHA currently doing?
  • Posting job opportunities at no cost.
  • Providing a low-cost, effective Summer IH course.
  • Meetings are FREE for Students (and those unemployed).
Other Suggestions:
  • The Annual Northeast IH Conference & Exposition (NJ, NY, Philly, DE) is a first class conference but it is cost prohibitive to students; need to reduce the fee ($10 – 20?).
  • Think about partnering with the Chamber of Commerce, Commerce & Industry Associations, Business & Industry Associations, and Chemical Councils.
