The NJAIHA will be hosting Professional Development Courses (PDCs) on Thursday, December 2nd, the day prior to the Northeast Industrial Hygiene Conference (NEIHce). The PDCs will be presented virtually on Zoom.

Courses Include:

  • Course #1 (8:30am-11:00am): HazCom Standard/GHS Update for the Practicing Industrial Hygienist; Denese A. Deeds, CIH, FAIHA, SDSRP IHSC, LLC

In 2012 OSHA revised the Hazard Communication Standard to adopt the Globally Harmonized System for the Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS).  That revision adopted, mainly, revision 3 of the GHS. The GHS is updated on a biennial basis so 6 revisions of the GHS have been issued since revision 3. OSHA has proposed up update the Hazcom Standard to incorporate the changes to the GHS through revision 7.

This will result in some major changes to certain hazard classes and the addition of some new hazard classes. OSHA has also proposed some changes to the label and SDS requirements.  In this course, we will review the proposed changes, review the results of the September public hearing and discuss what impact these changes will have on your Hazard Communication Program. Since industrial hygienists review products for their hazards to recognize, anticipate, evaluate and control those hazards, it is important to understand the changing landscape of hazard classification.

Denese Deeds is co-founder of IHSC, LLC where she is the Director of Chemical Regulatory Services. In that function she prepares SDS, labels and other hazard communication documents, and assists companies with overall chemical regulatory compliance. Prior to founding IHSC she worked as an industrial hygienist for General Electric and Westinghouse. Denese is certified in the Comprehensive Practice of Industrial Hygiene by the ABIH. Denese is active on the Stewardship and Sustainability Committee and served on the team that developed the SDS and Label Author Registry.

She is a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA), a past president of the Society for Chemical Hazard Communication (SCHC), a Registered Specialist SDS and Label Authoring, the 2014 recipient of the AIHA Alice Hamilton Award, and a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for SCHC.

  • Course #2 (2:00pm-4:30pm): Building an Ethical Foundation for Occupational Safety and Health Programs; Nancy Orr, CIH, CSP, FAIHA

**This course fulfills the ABIH ethics requirement for CIH recertification maintenance credit.**

This PDC on Ethical Fitness helps participants develop an increased awareness of the ethical issues and how they arise. Participants will learn to:

  • Understand the nature of personal values and their role in guiding conduct
  • Apply tools and skills to analyze ethical dilemmas
  • Learn to identify and resolve potential ‘conflict of interest’ situations
  • Make higher quality ethical decisions

Participants in this course will acquire essential skills necessary to make higher quality ethical decisions. This skill – building process begins by developing an awareness of ethical issues and how they arise. The role of personal values and their application to decision – making is then examined. Participants practice using analytical techniques to explore right vs. wrong situations as distinct from right vs. right dilemmas, where values conflict. Explore how to resolve situations where truth conflicts with loyalty; justice and mercy; set both short-term and long-term goals, and understand self-interest conflicts with the community’s interest. Finally, participants will apply several resolution approaches to dilemmas in search of “the higher right.”
