November 2022 Dinner Meeting

Agenda:

3:30 p.m. AIHA, NJ Section, Inc. – Executive Committee Meeting

5:00 p.m. Networking/Cash Bar

5:45 p.m. Before Dinner Session:

Topic: What to do about the Psychology of Bad Excuses in Safety and Health

Speaker: Wayne Baruch

Wayne Baruch recently retired as Director of Safety from Forest Electric Corporation NJ, in Edison, NJ.  During his tenure, the company passed 57 months, nearly 1.5 million work hours without any OSHA recordable incidents, and achieved an EMR of 0.212.  As Forest ventured into this statistically risky safety record, he implemented a project to document and prioritize greatest areas of concern and developed programs to address those hazards, work types, and situations.  This also included the creation of a “Critical Procedures Program” that mimics OSHA’s National Emphasis Program and requires extra oversight for more hazardous work and work that Forest performs less often. Before joining FEC, he served as NJ Regional EHS Manager for Bancroft Construction, Wilmington, DE & Princeton, NJ. and as a Site Safety Manager for Turner Construction, in New York.  He worked on projects of up to 1 million square feet, 750 workers per day, and “major” NYC buildings.  This required establishing successful working relationships with client-owners, building engineers, fire safety directors, and FDNY, NY DOT, DOB, and DEP.He now volunteers for SCORE, mentoring small business owners.  Construction photography has evolved from before, during, and after photos to taking photographs of historic structures, spotlighting artisanship and ingenuity in construction, displaying nature’s beauty and tenacity, and present the ongoing competition between nature and our built world.  He also loves kayaking, which is great recreation and also gives access to other great subjects for photography.

6:30 p.m. $40 – Buffet Dinner

7:15 p.m. After Dinner Session:

Topic: The Covid-19 Macro , a statistical method of estimating Covid-19 risk at the workplace

Speaker: Dr. James Klyza , PhD, CIH, MSPH

Dr. Klyza  received his BS at Cornell University, Ithica, NY, and went on to study at University of Kentucky in Lexington, KY , for his MSPH with a concentration in Industrial Hygiene in 2000.   He worked for Raytheon as an Industrial Hygienist , then started his PhD at University of  Cincinnati, Cincinnati, OH, and received his PhD in 2010 .   He came to OSHA in 2011 out of Parsippany Area Office as a compliance officer, and now works for OSHA National Office, OFAP .  He also been a professor at Eastern Kentucky University in Industrial Hygiene
