February 2019 – President’s Message

Hello fellow NJAIHA members!  I hope everyone is staying warm and safe this winter.

NJAIHA is working on a marketing campaign to educate students and young professionals in IH, science, engineering, safety, biology and chemistry about the industry and careers in IH.  At the February meeting, the PR company will take professional photos of NJAIHA members and plan to post photos with captions on the website as part of this campaign.  The PR company would help write a few sentences for each volunteer.  Please consider attending the meeting Thursday and participate by having your photo taken.

We had an excellent January NJAIHA Meeting.  First, we had Robert DeMalo, Senior Vice President of EMSL Analytical educate us on Asbestos in Consumer Products.  Robert made us aware of asbestos in consumer products from cosmetics to shuffleboard pucks.  We are better informed and more aware of the inherent challenges of the analytical testing.  Second, we had John Iannotti of Pine Environmental tell us about tools of the trade for remedial investigation and vapor intrusion.  John discussed the Frog Portable GC, XRF for lead in paint, a case study for Pb/As in soil, telemetry, and a FLIR IR camera.  It is great that we have such knowledgeable and approachable resources as Robert and John in our area for our meetings.  Thanks guys.

You don’t want to miss the dinner meeting this month as we have great presenters with interesting topics and real-world case studies.  Thomas Abdallah, P.E. is Deputy Vice President and Chief Environmental Engineer at NYC MTA and will present the Before-Dinner Session on Sustainable Mass Transit.  Thomas will discuss sustainable initiatives that have been included in train and bus networks that maximize energy efficiency.  Jack Glass, MS, CIH is VP of Environmental Health & Safety at ALC Environmental and will present the After-Dinner Session on NYC Local Laws 55 and 61.  Jack will present on the moisture intrusion and microbial remediation that are required by the newly-enacted NYC Local Laws 55 and 61.

If anyone is interested in volunteering, we have an Executive Board position opening up for President-elect.  The term for this position is one year and the president-elect is primarily responsible for organizing the monthly meetings.  At the end of this year, the president-elect transitions to president for one year and then past-president for a third year.  We have a great group of people on the Board and I am sure whoever steps into this role will enjoy their time and involvement.  I have enjoyed participating on the board and encourage others to reach out to the board if you are interested or have any questions.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our February meeting and don’t forget March is our joint meeting with NJ ASSE and MABSA.

Sincerely,
Doug Glorie, PE, CIH
President NJAIHA
